Pretty Pictures at Chatham

Chatham Flowers

Chatham Flowers

Last week I toured a historic house (and its grounds) in Fredericksburg, VA. While it has a rather gory history due to its’ Civil War past, most of my photos are of the gardens and other features added after.

There were other things certainly worth photographing, such as the graffiti left by soldiers on the walls while Chatham was being used as a war hospital, but unfortunately these were covered by thick protective plastic and barely legible to begin with. It was very difficult to imagine the house as having “blood saturated” floors, or to envision the limbs Walt Whitman described piled under the Catalpa trees out front.
